On this challenge you will spend two weeks volunteering on a variety of projects aimed at improving education quality in the Sacred Valley. You will be challenged to step out of your comfort zone and think creatively as you volunteer to give local children and their families a brighter future.
Our Peru Community Challenge is perfect for anyone who wants experience teaching or working with children, is interested in grass-roots community development or someone who just wants to use their skills to make a difference!
You will be volunteering in one of our partner schools to teach a range of workshops that supplement the national curriculum and improve education quality. You could be teaching sessions that focus on conversational English, STEM, life skills, creative arts and sports! We encourage our volunteers to be creative and deliver fun workshops that will both engage children and allow them to learn hands-on.
You will also have the chance to volunteer on a renovation project at one of our partner schools with the aim of creating a safer and more inspiring learning environment. You could be painting an educational mural, renovating a playground, creating a library, installing a hand-washing station and more!
Following an induction and orientation when you arrive, your volunteering days will be Monday-Friday with the weekends free to do your own travel. We recommend heading to UNESCO World Heritage city Cusco and making a trip to the infamous Rainbow Mountain!
After your volunteer program you can join our optional extension trip for $800 and embark on the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, a truly once in a lifetime experience! On this 5-day trek you'll walk more than 70km and reach an altitude of 4600m above sea level as you make your way to South America's most famous landmark. You'll see Humantay Lake, cross Salkantay Mountain and pass through cloud forests before reaching Machu Picchu for that bucket list moment at the end of your trip!

My time in Peru was a very rewarding and memorable experience. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to teach in a local school. I was fortunate to implement STEM in the classroom, which saw students work together, be creative, hands on and problem solve. It was wonderful to see the kids get out of their comfort zone and experience a different style of learning.Cian Cattelini - Australian Catholic University
Volunteering in Peru has been the most amazing, rewarding and at times a challenging experience with an incredible group of people. This little part of the world will always have a place in my heart.Isabella McConaghy - Queensland University of Technology
Volunteering with challenges abroad has been such an incredible experience and one that has impacted me for the better. It was eye opening being able to teach children in a third world country and I feel much more appreciative and grateful for what I have. While some aspects of the trip were challenging, overall it was an incredible experience that I will be eternally grateful for.Niki Bath - University of the Sunshine Coast
There is not a better feeling than feeling like you’ve made a difference. This challenge gave me that opportunity. Living, working and playing in Peru enabled me to see, hear, feel and taste this beautiful culture and I’m forever grateful for the Challenges Abroad team for ensuring my safety and well-being when it came to trying new food and climbing to new heights. It took my breath away- literally!Brianna Clunes - University of the Sunshine Coast
We spent 3 weeks in Peru with wonderful people, contributed towards a meaningful project, were shown some of the most beautiful places on Earth (both tourist attractions and authentic cultural experiences off the beaten track), and we have all grown immensely in such a short amount of time. I enjoyed every minute!Melissa Garcia - Griffith University
I could not have been more impressed with my whole experience in Peru and the extension trip. Everything was organised so well and along with helping in the school, which I found so rewarding and amazing, it was great to be able to still have so much time to explore the stunning Sacred valley. I would not have changed one thing and will go back at the earliest I can afford to!Emma McConaghy - Griffith University
