Challenge Snapshot

Duration: 15 Days
Location: Thailand
Total Cost: $2720

The communities that we work with in Northern Thailand face significant health challenges. There is a lack of awareness of personal hygiene sanitation practices among community members, which causes a lot of unnecessary illness. On top of this, there is a lack of understanding of how to treat non-serious sicknesses, so locals are going to the hospital to treat things like the common cold. This is putting a huge burden on the already under-resourced hospital.

Sexual health topics are stigmatised in the community which has led to high rates of teen pregnancy. This means that sexual health, mental health as well as pre- and post-natal care are important topics for the community to be aware of.

Finally, obesity and other lifestyle diseases are on the rise in Thailand. 1 in 10 people now have diabetes due to a poor diet and lack of physical activity, and most schools aren’t serving nutritious meals to their students.

how you can help

We work on a number of projects in the community to improve overall community health, which you will be involved in as a health volunteer. Your primary focus will be on raising awareness in the local community and at local schools by delivering workshops focusing on non-communicable diseases, pre- & post natal care, mental health & wellbeing, nutrition & physical activity and WASH practices (water, sanitation & hygiene).

Volunteers with relevant qualifications / area of study may even be part of community screenings and health checks in collaboration with the local hospital.

program structure

When you arrive in Thailand you’ll be met by our team at the airport. Over the next few days you’ll have a thorough induction and orientation where you’ll learn about Thai customs and culture, get your bearings around town, meet community partners and gain a better understanding of the context of the projects you’re working on.

Over two weeks, you’ll work in the community Monday - Friday with your weekend free to travel and explore. Your day will usually be structured with a morning session (approx. 3 hours) after breakfast and then a session of the same length after lunch. Your afternoons and evenings will be free for you to relax or do any required planning for the next day. On this program you’ll be primarily based in Mae Sariang, but may also spend some time in the remote hill tribe villages we work with.

On the last day, you’ll either be transported back to the airport or you can join our extension trip tour of Northern Thailand!

After the markets and nightlife of Chiang Rai you'll head to Chiang Dao for some hiking, bamboo rafting and exploring waterfalls before heading to Pai for some relaxation.
