Challenge Snapshot

Duration: 22 Days
Location: India
Total Cost: $3570

On this Challenge you get to spend two weeks in Palampur volunteering with the local community on a range of projects aimed at improving education quality. You'll be challenged to step out of your comfort zone and think creatively while volunteering with the local community, before spending your last week on a 5-day trek into the Himalayas!

who can volunteer?

If you want to learn more about grass-roots community development, gain experience teaching and working with children or you're someone who wants to use your skills to make a difference, the Himalaya Challenge is perfect!

what you'll be doing

During your volunteering weeks you’ll be immersed in the local culture in and around Palampur, working in one of our partner schools to deliver a range of educational workshops. You could be teaching sessions that focus on conversational English, life skills, the environment, creative arts and sports! We encourage our volunteers to be creative and deliver fun workshops that will engage the children and allow them to learn hands-on.

You will also have the chance to work on a renovation project at one of our partner schools with the aim of creating a safer and more inspiring learning environment. You could be painting an educational mural, renovating a playground, creating a library, installing a hand-washing station and more!

the trek

The 5-day trek through Nohru Pass will test your endurance, but the spectacular and breathtaking scenery will more than compensate for the strenuous ascents! You don’t need to be an experienced trekker to participate on this Challenge, however you should have at least an average level of fitness as parts of the trek can be quite challenging.

weekly structure

During your 3 weeks your volunteering days will be Monday - Friday and you’ll have at least one free weekend to do your own travel. We recommend heading to nearby Dharamshala to visit the home of the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government, or if you’re more of an adrenaline junkie you could go paragliding from the second highest location in the world!

Extend your volunteer trip

After your volunteer program you can join our optional extension trip for $950 and spend a week on the most spectacular tour of India! You'll begin by heading to Amristar where you'll visit the Golden Temple and watch the famous lowering of the flags ceremony at the Wagah Border. Next up is Agra where you'll spend time exploring the Red Fort, local markets and the one and only Taj Mahal! Your final destination will be Delhi where you'll visit the Old and New cities and have plenty of time to do you own exploring before catching your flight home.
